    Iocu de pignati

The game of “pignate” (clay pots) takes place during the celebration of Saint Calogero, usually on Via Grande. A blinfolded man, carried on the shoulder of the another, tries to break the hanging pots with a stick. The pots are suspended on strings stretched across the street and tied to the opposite balconies. The surprise lies in the fact that some pots could be filled with colored water or sand, which splashes or soils the partecipants when broken. Others contain candies that scatter on the street and become an attraction for children.
In the past, instead of candies, coins were used – and even a small rabbit, which triggered a wild chase among the crowd to catch it. The game ends when all the pots have been broken.
