According to the legend, roughly every seven years, just before sunrise on an August day morning, a young nun can be seen making her way down to the path to the Tower of Monterosso, leading a donkey draped in ronaments and carrying a load of gold. After watering thw pack animal at the through near the foot of the mountain, she retraces her steps and disappears once again near the Tower. Whoever manages to touch her during her journey becomes the owner of the precious load!
For centuries, the popular tradition has passed dowth this tale, drwing on the possiible belief that a noble and young nun once suffered Saracen violence in that very tower. True or imaged, the story has fascinated entire generations, and still does today, sparking a playful ,yet sometimes genuine curiosity. After all, anyone can try their luck, driven by the ever- present longing for a better life.
