LEGEND
Zuccareddru
A legend that speaks of treasures is the one that tells of “Zuccareddru”, a place located halfway between Monte Rossello and Contrada Monterosso. Here stood the estate of a “burgisi” from the area (burgisi= an inhabitant of Burgio),who, during the days of Carnival, had ordered his loyal farmhand to go and plow his land. The next morning, he rose early and, accompanied by his wobbly donkey, made his way to the field in the Zuccareddru area to plow the land. After hitching the plow to his donkey, he began to work. Suddenly, to his great astonishemtnb, the plowshare unearthed a terracotta jar filled with beautiful oranges. Recovering from his amazement, he grabbed as many as he could with both hands, filling the sandlebags he had left just a few meters away. At noon, the ladowner arrived to bring him some bread and a bit of food. But the poor fellow was s o lost in his dreamy thoughts and he didn't even notice him approaching. “Peppe...Pèè..,” Called the landowner, “Come eat!” Peppe first unhitched the plow from the tied animal, then got ready to have his meal. But he was stunned when he noticed that the master had also brpought him oranges as part of his lunch. “But my saddlebags are full of them”, said the young man, almost annoyed. And then he began to recount, in full detail, what he seemed very strange to him. The master almost mocked him, but curious, he went over to the haystack (a kind of shelter made of bundles of straw) where Peppe had placed his few belongings. But great was the surprise when he realized that the errand’s boy were all made of gold. The sly man, without letting anyone notice, replaced the real oranges he had brought that ones found by Peppe and left without even saying goodbye to the errand boy. After eating, he went on with his work until evening, while the old fox of his master had grown even richer thanks to his golden oranges. Legend as it that after many years, that greedy master, on his deathbed, havind had no children and full of remorse, wished to leave a donation to the church of Realmonte – if only to silence his coscience. Some say that none of it is true and it’s just a product of popular imagination. But one thing is certain: until a few years ago, during the last three years of Carnival, the so – called “Forthy hours of Zuccareddru” were celebrated in the Mother Church of Realmonte, and the Blessed Sacrament was exposed to the faithful for three days.
